IMAGINE LIFE WITHOUT BALANCE
Balance-related disorders affect more than 69 million Americans — that’s nearly 1 in 5 people suffering from vestibular dysfunction. Despite the ubiquity of vestibular disorders, the word “vestibular” hasn't entered mainstream vernacular. Few know that “vestibular” refers to the inner ear and brain — the complex, mysterious human system that controls our sense of balance.
Close your eyes and stand on one foot. It’s hard right? Now imagine having that same disorienting feeling on two feet, and with your eyes open. Balance is something most of us take for granted. We don’t often think about our balance—until we lose it. So many people go for so long trying to figure out what is going on with them, and they have to become researchers, detectives, and advocates for their own healthcare. and together we can support people struggling with dizziness, vertigo and imbalance on their journey toward a life rebalanced.
Now, Balance Awareness Week is a week-long awareness campaign presented by the Vestibular Disorders Association (VeDA) to broaden the public’s understanding of balance-related disorders, such as Meniere’s disease and vestibular migraine, and of symptoms that include dizziness, imbalance, vertigo, and tinnitus. While many of these conditions are incurable, faster and more accurate diagnoses, along with effective treatment and coping strategies, can greatly improve patients’ quality of life.
I have joined VeDA's Community of Support to help advance the funding, research, and policy-making needed to positively impact the lives of millions struggling with the confounding, devastating impacts of vestibular dysfunction. You can help by making a donation to my personal campaign. Thank you!
